Juan Carlos Sanchez, who handles securities fraud cases at Robbins Geller in San Diego, has been with the firm full-time for 10 years. He summered at the firm in 2013, clerked for U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos of the Southern District of Texas and then joined the firm in fall 2015. Sanchez’s parents often worked two jobs apiece to make ends meet and now live in retirement off a pension from his father’s job as a custodian. He said, because of that, he always knew he wanted to be a plaintiff-side attorney and handle class actions “to produce the greatest benefit and impact to the greatest number of people.”
Sanchez said that his empathy has been a personality trait that has set him apart and helped him professionally. “When you empathize with a client’s plight, you really know what’s at stake—and it inspires you to do the best job imaginable,” he said. “I think some of the most important qualities in an attorney—always being prepared, pushing the envelope, recognizing opportunities, for example—stem from having empathy toward your client and being relentless with your advocacy on their behalf.”
Sanchez said this approach has led him to treat every client like a member of his family and to build teams that work toward building consensus. “You want to empower everyone on the team to speak their minds because a concern now could grow into a more serious problem later,” he said. “Foster an environment that’s flat, so a hierarchy doesn’t stop people from sharing with each other.”
