Court directs entry of partial final judgment, awarding $2.4 billion in Household litigation
On October 4, 2013, U.S. District Judge Ronald A. Guzman in Chicago denied defendants’ last-gasp efforts for a new trial, and instead ordered Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP, as Lead Counsel, to submit a proposed final judgment within five days. In doing so, Judge Guzman held Household International, now owned by HSBC Holdings Plc, liable for about $1.475 billion in damages and almost $960 million in pre-judgment interest, for a partial judgment in favor of approximately 11,000 class members of $2.4 billion. The case was originally filed in 2002 – and Robbins Geller attorneys obtained a positive jury verdict in May 2009. Robbins Geller is still fighting defendants' objections to the claims of approximately 28,000 other class members, which are valued at over $650 million. A follow-up status conference with the court is scheduled for October 23, 2013.
