Daily Journal Selects Daniel Pfefferbaum to its 2017 “Top 40 Under 40” List

April 12, 2017

On April 12, 2017, the Daily Journal recognized Robbins Geller partner Daniel J. Pfefferbaum to its “Top 40 Under 40” list. The publication honors top young attorneys annually, 20 for Northern California and 20 for Southern California, in all fields and practices.  In the profile article showcasing Pfefferbaum and his work, the publication highlighted the Trump University cases, commending the attorney for “stepp[ing] well outside his legal specialty to represent former Trump University students pro bono in two fraud class actions against Donald J. Trump asserting false advertising, unfair business practices and Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization Act violations.”

"The litigation predates Trump's campaign, but it was intensely fought even before he was a candidate," Pfefferbaum told the Daily Journal. "It was scorched-earth tactics all the way. When he made his [presidential candidacy] announcement, it ratcheted up the exposure."

Obtained shortly before trial was set to commence last November, the settlement, approved on March 31, provides $25 million to approximately 7,000 consumers, which means that individual class members will be eligible for upwards of $35,000 in restitution. "We are extremely proud of these results," Pfefferbaum told the Daily Journal, adding that the settlement “is historic for a consumer class action because the plaintiffs will recover so much.”

Pfefferbaum has been no stranger to successful wins and accolades throughout his career. He has been a member of litigation teams that have recovered more than $100 million for investors, including Garden City Emps.’ Ret. Sys. v. Psychiatric Sols., Inc. ($65 million recovery). Pfefferbaum has also been named to Benchmark Litigation’s inaugural Top Litigator Under 40 list for the last two consecutive years and was also selected by Northern California’s Super Lawyers Magazine as a Rising Star in the area of securities litigation for the years 2013-2016.
