Securities litigation
Dowd proved his trial skills are still in top form, winning the closely watched securities fraud trial against Household International earlier this year in which investors challenged the HSBC affiliate's disclosures about its real estate lending practices. After trial, the jury agreed with Dowd that the company had made misrepresentations and concealed aspects of its lending practices. Damages are expected to exceed $1 billion and the case is sure to generate more and more attention as other lawyers study disclosures by companies that failed in the subprime meltdown. Dowd, who got his start as a federal prosecutor in San Diego in the 1980s pursuing drug dealers and money laundering cases, plays a key role at the country's largest securities plaintiff firm.
